Tennessee’s child marriage bill pushes another purpose: Gutting same-sex marriage
And Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn has been VOCAL in condemning the Republican Legislation…. NOT!
And the other nitwit Republican Tennessee Senator, what’s his name…
Some Tennessee Republicans want to make common law marriage legal. But the bill being pushed through the legislature this week doesn’t have any age requirements and opponents say that paves the way for allowing child marriage.
Twenty-four Tennessee Republicans are sponsoring this legislation and right now it is making headlines around the world.
Tennessee Republican pushes bill to allow CHILD MARRIAGE that would scrap the state’s current minimum age of 17 before couples could tie the knot
- Bill sponsor Tom Leatherwood, 65, has introduced a bill into the Tennessee House that would eliminate age limits for common-law marriages
- Leatherwood said the bill proposed an ‘alternative form of marriage’ to those who ‘conscientiously object to the current pathway to marriage’
- Opponents to the bill worry the lack of age limits could cover up child sex abuse
- Nashville Representative Mike Stewart, 57, called the bill ‘ridiculous’
- He said the bill was a ‘get-out-of-jail-free card for people who are basically committing statutory rape’
- The state law currently allowed children 17 and older to get married. Minors are required to have parental consent
Republicans love nothing more than setting up their own “alternatives” to the cultural institutions they believe have been “tainted” by liberalism. Did Twitter ban you for racist vitriol and inciting domestic terrorism? Then try to start (but fail) at creating a Twitter of your own. Don’t like that Disney disavows hatred of LGBTQ people? Try to start a children’s entertainment company that pushes dull right-wing propaganda instead. Angry that major razor companies won’t financially support fascism? Make your own razors! Are you just generally mad at Starbucks because you have a sneaking suspicion that drinking coffee is somehow effeminate? Start your own coffee company that’s draped in gun-related imagery and pretend it doesn’t scream “overcompensation.” There will surely be a “conservative” Oreo to come out any day now that the right is mad about the company running pro-LGBTQ ads.
One Tennessee lawmaker has concocted a novel approach to opposing marriage equality: legalizing child marriages.
A bill authored by Tennessee state Rep. Tom Leatherwood would establish a pathway to common law marriages for people of faith who do not agree with the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2015 decision allowing same-sex couples to wed. The Republican lawmaker said his proposal, known as House Bill 233, seeks to create an “alternative form of marriage for those pastors and other individuals who have a conscientious objection” to LGBTQ2S+ rights.
“I’ve seen a change in the tide, and if there’s any hostility, it’s against those people who do believe marriage comes from God, not from government and do believe it’s between a man and a woman,” Leatherwood said in comments reported by the Tennessee NBC news affiliate WMC.

Social media users harshly criticized the bill, HB 233, which is being sponsored by Republican state Representative Tom Leatherwood. The bill has passed the Tennessee House’s Children and Family Affairs subcommittee and is due before the House Civil Justice Committee on Wednesday.
