The university has since apologized for the ‘confusion’ and said an investigation has been opened into the robberies.

The university approached Latimore earlier this year, asking for permission to display the painting, and he agreed to it free of charge, The New York Times reported.
On Monday, however, the institution retracted from its initial stance and apologized for the confusion the painting caused.
